Should we have a new Patron Saint of England?

St George is the patron saint of England but he hasn't always been the patron St. Originally the position was held by St Edmund who gave his name to the Suffolk town of Bury St Edmunds. With St George struggling to catch the imagination of the English in the way that St Patrick has with the Irish, is it time to consider putting St Edmund back where he once was?
St george is Patron saint of 27 other countrys he is not english and was forced on England by the Normans after 1066 before that it was St Edmund.
St George and his flag has been used by far right groups and has become a tarnished st .
So I think England should get rid of St George and his flag and replace it with Englands flag before the French took over

there is now an e-petition on line to change from St George to St Edmund

No

Im a little dubious about both

A a Roman who killed an imaginary dragon is a saint ( thou shalt not kill)

B a native who lost his head in battle but got it back on with the help of a talking wolf

Its pretty plausible religion, always throwing out real life everyday scenarios like you get in take a break, we must stick with george

After all deporting a foriegner out after all this time for an indiginous englishman could be seen as racist

nobody knows who St. George REALLY was or where he came from. So ill choose to believe that he was from the middle of England, and battered a dragon in its face.
Next the people who want the change will be telling buddhists to stop using the swastika because Hitler messed it up. Get rid of santa too, because hes santa to other countries and hes not just "ours". its ludicrous

Not only that but St Edmonds flag replacing part of the Union Flag in place of St George's would really mess things up. Mind you will they change the Union Flag if Scotland goes it's own way?
