Mercedes CAN filter

Hi,
Could someone please help, I have a small question. Exactly what does the CAN filter do in regards to the EZS? Does it stop the EZS writing the mileage from cluster to EZS eeprom? Or does it just report whatever is in the cluster?

For example, 2013 W204. Lets say i have done 5000km, I install a filter and drive for another 10000km, so odo is now 15000km. What is currently in the EZS eeprom, 5000km?
And if i set the cluster back to 5000km and remove the filter, do I have now 5000km synced between the cluster and EZS?
I hope that's understandable.
