Butter enough of the raisin loaf and cut in half (lengthways) and line the edge of the greased dish.
Butter enough raisin loaf and cut in half (diagonally) and cover the base of the dish.
Add a sprinkle of sultanas.
Now repeat with the ordinary white bread to add a layer on top of the base layer, again with sultanas on top.
For the top layer use the remaining raisin loaf but no more sultanas.
Pour the milk plus 4fl.oz. of cream into a pan. Warm this gently until hot but don't let it boil. Stir it occasionally.
While the milk is warming, crack the 2 eggs into a bowl and beat, then add the 2 desert spoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence and stir together.
Add the hot (but not boiling) milk to the eggs/sugar and stir together. Now pour slowly over the bread in the dish.
Sprinkle a little ground nutmeg and a little sugar on top and leave to stand for at least half an hour.
Now put into the oven for roughly 45 mins or untill the top is crisp and golden.
Serve hot or cold, but it's delicious straight from the oven with a little of the remaining double cream on top.
Enjoy!!
