I'm Bolton but it sounds like you may have a clone F5.

Does the remote control have a gold qc sticker on the back?
Does the remote have the word SKYBOX moulded into the plastic behind the battery cover?

Lets do some basic checks first
- has it worked before
- does bbc1 work

Try updating the firmware from this site www.hddvbsw.com (http://hddvbsw.com/) then try to load the channel list.
