try uninstalling all printer software and drivers and re install, if that doesnt work you have more than likely got a missing windows system file and the file would have to be identified and replaced.

Boot into safe mode and remove all printer drivers/software.
reboot back into mormal mode and reconnect printer, then instal again.

If it was working then why not try rolling back your system to a time that it was working ok?

uninstall all printer software.

go to start.
run then type

services.msc

a box will open up and browse down the right hand window till you find "Print spooler" make sure its on AUTOMATIC rather than disabled.

HP drivers generaly install their own spool and disable the default microsoft one.
if its not on the list then you'll need to add it (your printer driver will have thought it prudent to delete it)

to do that go to ADD and REMOVE programs under settings and click on add windows fetures.
look through the list till you find anything printer related and install it.
you will be prompted for your vista/XP/2000 disk.

As nige has asked, what is the make/model of the printer.

How do you know its a virus?
Also if you can uninstal the software chances are that its being used somewhere.
As i said before boot into safe mode and remove the software from there.

You still have not told us the info asked...

The reason i ask the info above is because I have seen this error on a few machines, admittedly is mainly (but can be others) when they have an HP printer connected though. The HP software is notoriously crap and insists on auto updating itself via the net every week or so. This update which is pointless if the printer is working fine and is configured as required because it seems to kill the config you have that points to which port etc.. In most cases I have blocked the HP software from autoupdating with a Zonelarm tweak and set the printer port again, if its a network printer then I found it was best to specify the actual IP address in the printer properties TCIP port config..

I have also seen this on a shite samsung printer as well, so it could be worth looking into.

The symtoms you have do not sound like a virus to me, just a shite printer app and a dirty PC that needs more protection from driveby net nasties. However if you are sure you have a virus and your AVG isn't picking it up (which is rare as AVG tends to be very thorough) then you need to download, update with latest defs (if applicable) and run the following.:
