Virgin Media Inc. plans to launch as many as six new high-definition channels in the third quarter of 2009, the company's Chief Executive Neil Berkett said Tuesday.

"We'll be launching as many as six high-definition channels in the third quarter," Berkett said.

"And we already have over 300 hours of high-definition content on our video on demand service," he added.

In January fellow pay-television and broadband provider British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC said it planned to accelerate investment in high- definition and it cut the price of its Sky+ high-definition set-top box to GBP49 from GBP150.

News Corp., publisher of this newswire, holds a stake of around 39% in BSkyB.

Earlier Tuesday Virgin Media reported a 1.2% drop in first-quarter revenue to GBP935.7 million from GBP947.3 million last year, but said that churn, or the number of people leaving Virgin, was at a record low and revenue per customer continued to rise.
