I have just moved to Ipswich and have had an 80cm motorised dish installed on the side of the house at 2nd floor level [approx. 30ft] but due to the close proximity of a tree belt am losing quality on my PROTEK receiver with the east satellites. Strength is good. The trees are about 20ft from the house so how can I work out, other than by trial and error, how much I should lob off the top of the trees?. Thanks for any suggestions as I do not wish to spoil the outlook any more than is necessary.

dishpointer dot com should help you decide

which has a LOS/obstacle height checker that uses google earth/maps.
Enter your full address, select satellite (example - 28.2E Astra 2A,B and D), zoom in on your property move the green marker to different locations, it will give you a line of site, move the red marker along the green LOS line and it will tell you the maximum height of an obstacle at any given distance can be before it becomes an issue...

Enter your address and select the correct dish type in the drop down box. It will show you a Google map view with a line showing the azimuth for aiming. On the map you can move the point around to see if it helps getting around obstacles. Once you have the spot on your home or property where you want to place the dish you can then turn on the line of sight checker. On the top right hand concern of the map you can check the "show obstacle (line of sight check) and it will give you a second point which you can move around. It will tell you the maximum height the obstacle can be at a different distances from your dish.

Don't forget to zoom in on the map so you can get the exact location on your property and you can see it better.

Thats pretty close in being just over 6m away so if your dish is around 30ft = 9.1m the at that 6m distance they could not be more than about 1.2m higher roughly or you will start having problems.

This is just a rough estimated guess but a ramjet pointed out use the dishpointer site and that will give you a better distance and height rating for obstacles.

Are you sure you are estimating the dish height correctly ???? You say second story level but then state 30ft. e.g from ground level to eaves on my house which has standard height ceilings on ground and first floor is approx 16ft. If house has visible bricks a good gestimate is that 50 course of bricks is around 14ft

You could accidently drill a hole in the trunk of the tree! & fill it with a bit of copper pipe......:smug:
