Leaking deisel around the gearbox area, taken to many mechanics cannot figure out what it is, not fuel filter, anyone with any ideas?

you sure you leaking deisel and not any other fluid a garage should find a diesel leak in minutes id of thought very dangerous aswell.

Is the top of the gearbox damp, or just the underneath?

I think that's the VW engine in there right?!

JUst a follow up - was the daft garage, had just had it serviced and I think there was an overspill of oil, that was slowly comming down, I tired 2 diesel specilists and after losing ?70 I found out there was no leak.

yes it does happen gets spilt and leaks down after a while.
