Hello all,
i have a problem with R170 1999 SLK 230K,
problem occurs when driving and accelerating,
suddenly ASR Light comes on cutting the engine on 2000RPM and rough idle.
connected with STAR to both engine ecu(ME), and ASR.
ASR: C1022 - Fault in CAN communication with ME N3/10
BAS: C1025 - CAN Signals
ECU: No Trouble Code.
After turning off ignition and re-starting the car problem is sorted for about 2 minutes and comes back on again.
i have another set of Engine ECU, and ASR units, tried changing them but problem still remains exactly the same symptom.
any help will be deeply appreciated since this car is really frustrating me.

Time to get the scope out or at least the dmm and check the wires connecting the two units. A good diagram would be a big help.

Hello my friend and thank you for your quick reply.
today i connected my scope to CAN-LINE high and low, and local ground.
i could not notice any trouble on the CAN, both high and low mirror each other and when problem occours CAN line remain the same.
on the WIS Diagrams wiring goes to some central connection between all CAN-LOW and CAN-HIGH lines but i could not find it.
from ASR seems like communication lines go to BAS and from Engine-ECU to the transmission ECO.
do you have any idea where they meet?

Maybe the problem is on the earth side.

(problem occurs when driving and accelerating,)mate this give me image like size of tires not proper maybe?or mistake in wheel rpm counder.

About tire size, Original tyre size is:
Front: 205/55/R16
Rear: 225/50/R16
fitted on the car:
Front: 225/45/R17
Rear: 225/45/R17
By diameter measurement and convert on this site i get only 0.48% (3 mm) difference between the sizes on total wheel diameter between original measurement and fitted measurement. this size is shown on autodata also, do you think its enaugh to get this out of my mind?
is tyre width a matter here?

Get it out of your mind. The fault codes say it all ,< CAN CAN CAN> The signal is wrong or no signal!!!! Where did you test the signal? Test at both the ASR and BAR, It may well be dropping out between the two. Look for a broken or chaffed wire for starters.

so faster way to check for this problem is-unlug abs-asr unit and the sensor for traverse back in baggage side.make one test if problem insist dont plug again but go to replace plate voltage relay in the ecu box.again go for ride.if problem insist unplug cluster and ride again.the only you left is ecu:joyous:with unplug all units car must accelerating well.

What do you mean by "sensor for treverse in baggage side"?
without connection to BAS i think the car is not starting.

first start from hi voltage relay k40 in ecu box.replace and test.after unplug all what i write in (asr-abs unit and ABS ASR Lateral Yaw Acceleration Sensor Turn Rate Sensor.

ABS ASR Lateral Yaw Acceleration Sensor Turn Rate Sensor.AND SOME MORE check if the fan cooling for ecu works cause if not ecu see over heat and cut can comunication too.262036

ECU Fan was not working so i fixed it. opened it and put new brushes. now it is working 100%.
where is the leteral acceleration sensor or YAW sensor?
in some models of 170 (mainly with ESP) i know its under the center console near hand break but on my car (1999) there is nothing there.
K40 Relay has been checked and re-solder all joints there.
i made ground bypass for two ground wires on ASR ECU (2 thick brown wires), Directly to battery.
can anyone point me to a diagram of other grounds? such as for engine ECU and BAS?
I Deeply thank you for all the information!

mate did you unplug asr unit and ride a test?this is the faster way for check if problem start from asr unit or sensors??

I am sorry for the delay with progress about this car, it has a major leak of transmission oil from the parking release cable, i dont want to cause any more problems driving like this.
Ordered the leaking part today should be done by the end of the week and i will update as soon as i can!

Boot strap the me control unit in the adaptions menu. The throttle actuator can sometimes cause this fault.

my friends i have an update.
finally sorted out the problem with the leaky transmission oil.
started going through all CAN-BUS communication lines and found out that this car has no Central Locking ECU (the one with the vaccume pump).
someone fitted a module from an older model or something and it is not connected to the CAN-BUS lines at all.
some wires has been cut but all insulated good. CAN High and Low are not connected to anything.
could the missing of this module effect our can-bus faults?
Tried boot strapping but it keep saying it could not be done.
in addition, ASR Ecu coding is cleared. i can code it but dont know what code necessary.

could not get my hands on a second-hand vaccum pump ecu.. even as second-hand this part is very expensive - and i dont even know if it is related to the problem described.
what do you think guys?

On a can system all who are invited, must be in attendance before the party can start. If someone is missing (door control module) then no party...:blue:.

Update: Car is still with the same problem.
we installed PSE pump ecu.
had a same car in the shop this week,
tried changing EVERYTHING: all sensors (CMP, CKP, MAF, TPS, Tranny sensors), throttle valve, kompressor throttle valve, ignition coils.
ASR ecu, Transmission ECU, engine ECU (whole starting set), BAS ecu.
problem still occours.
we are really runing out of options starting to think about pushing it off a cliff.
the problem only occurs during acceleration 3/4 gas pedal, for example during overtake and it shut down the engine power.
limiting the engine to 3000 rpm. impossible to drive. very dangerous on the road.
any help would be much appreciated.

Just now a little light came on in my head, are the wheels alloy? If so get them off and check if one is egg shaped. You may be better off taking them to the tyre shop and have them on the spinner/balance machine. Had something similar on a merc ml, similar problems- big headache.

forgot to mention,
i suspected the tyre size,
so i also changed the rims+tires from the other car...
no change :bawling:
Huge amount of work without any change.. frustrated from this car...

Have you tried brake light switch? Oh, and battery is good?
And you said you had oil leak at the gearbox plug connection? If so, check the ecu plug connector and abs connectors for oil. It is common for the oil to travel all the way into the Ecu's, engine, transmission, sometimes ABS i think?, also into plug connectors for the oxygen sensor and camshaft adjustment magnet connectors. Worth having a look.
And just check all pins on the ABS plug connector on the pump, i've seen corrosion on these. Unless you already swapped the abs unit?
The only other thing, i'm not sure why it would cause rough idle, perhaps the PCV breather hoses beneath the supercharger are blocked/broken, but i can't see why it would bring the ASR light on, unless the car doesn't have a check engine light perhaps?
