A friend has a house in Spain and asking me to come out and set his dish and box up. Is it posaible to align Sky Uk out there and use a skybox?

Yes of course.

Haven't the footprints been tightened up recently, requiring larger dishes, or even getting no signal at all?

It also depends in which part of Spain your friend lives.

You will need a 2 metre dish out there.

This may give you a rough idea of reception reports and what size dish is needed as Spain is a Big country

my mates had one out there for a while and he's telling me all the ex-pats are complaining they've lost all the FTA channels as well as the s*y channels.

I had my uk sky registered to a UK address then had the box out at my house in kaiserslautern, it worked just fine on a standard size dish. Only returned to the UK in Feb of this year.
