Can someone please explain in simple terms why VM channels can be decrypted using something like a Dreambox and some image software, but Sky can't.

Because the encryption used is Different! The encryption currently being used by VM and alike throughout most of the UK is NagraVision 1; the encyption being used by BskyB is NDS! NDS has been operating as a encryption system now for 11 years with Sky and never has it been breached!
NagraVision 1 is a very old encryption and has been hacked for a very long time! Due to the costs VM are struggling to to change the encryption for Cable TV services therefore allowing some to view their premium channels for Free.

BskyB where offering over a million in prizemoney to the first person to crack the encryption back in the day (roughly the same time the DES cracking challenge was going on)
I dont know if its still the case but im fairly certain if you cracked it then sky would be willing to part with a sizable chunk of change to both keep you quiet and tell them how you did it.

NDS as not as squeaky clean as you would think

I do not believe that is true, it is rumoured that their VideoGuard design is very flexible and the box hardware can be re-configured over the air allowing them to keep one step ahead. You know they have re-issued new viewing cards numerous times.

Again, I find that hard to believe. If true, the $ky NDS design, VideoGuard is not fixed. All they need do is re-program the boxes over the air and if necessary replace the cards. At most they might offer you a high paid job but that is about it.
Edit: Although that transcript said replacing cards cost $95M (seems a lot!) so maybe... (although that transcript is riddled with technical errors and incorrect naming).

Yep BskyB were and still are offering 1m for the first hack. If sky believe they have been comprimised they will change the rom used to another. Viasat on 5e encrypted in NDS and is partially open in the latest TM patches.
SkyUK only change cards So often to try and combat cardSharing.

Dont the keys roll on sky like every 20 seconds or something, and that is why it cannot be hacked. And though virmin were using nagra 2? And testing out these new nagra 3 cards that apparently cannot be cracked.

sly change there keys every 4 to 5 seconds. Its not about hacking one specific key. If you hack the algorithm for the certain rom SKY are using from NDS then you in for a laugh. and prison of course.

You actually pay for those 3 meals a day, with the wages that are earned whilst inside.

If you can hack it then maybe they will tell you how to claim it. They offer this as they would rather lose 1m then all their subscribers going and watching SKY for free.
