Hello
I think the white smoke is water from the engine. Check the coolant level to see if it is missing. As for burnt smell, it is maybe the color from new cat .

All the k series engines are well knowned for blowing head gaskets even on the later models rovers if the engine had got to hot when the head gasket went it maywell had damaged the piston rings if possible get someone to do a compresson test on all the cylinders to see if they are all the same

take it back to whoever fitted the head gasket (sounds like they used a cheapo head kit), and inform them once jobs fixed that you will be taking car for a cat test and they will be paying if it's now faulty;)

The 1.8 is an engine from hell and it ruins the reputation of any otherwise good car.

I have owned several Rover 75's CDT, V6 and 2 V8's I currently have a 400+ BHP Supercharged ZT V8

I won't work on 1.8 equipped ones for others now after an unpleasant experience. I changed the brake pads for an owner whos car then overheated a month later.
Absolutely nothing to do with my work but the Bastard wanted someone to blame for his inabilty to keep an eye on his water level. I have not touched a 1.8 since!
