Thought I would share this here for others that may run into this problem.

Symptom, tach does not function or reads wrong. Have seen them at 4500 RPM while idling lol Quick test, hold the trip button in and turn the key on to activate the gauge sweep function. The tach should sweep 5000, 3000, 1000, 0. Anything else and it has a bad solder joint on the tach driver IC. This usually only happens on the 2006 diesel, but I have repaired a few other years as well.

Remove the cluster and remove the back (18 torx screws). It's normally only one pin on the IC with a bad solder joint but inspect all of them under magnification as well as the other gauge driver IC, same size IC below the grey connector.
