BMW E46 2003 starting problem

hi guys

i was called to the above said car today
in abritus in diagnostics when i went into the EWS3
it said key in ignition unregcognised

so i plugged it into zedbull and tried to read it which it gave all info

so i also read the EWS3 module

can some1 look at the dump and make sure this key is in there and enabled
all keys in EWS unit say enabled all 10 of them

just the car will not try and start no turnover

i reprogrammed the EWS3 and then took it back to the car and installed it
put key in and still nothing at all
no starter kicking in

you recon the ignition coil that reads the transponder could be fluffed ??

scan ews & key status: --> key recognized by ews. {if not, check ring antena, voltage supply to ews}
also P/N switch status: --> switch in P/N. {if not in P/N car won't crank/start}

diagnostics to the EWS are fine
but when key is in the ignition it says key not recognised
so thus getting information from the EWS via OBD states voltage is good yes ?

ive just ordered a ring off ebay
hopefully this will fix the problem
will i have to write your EWS file back to the mcu again before installing the ring ?

not sure what you meant about P/N ??

SO I CHANGE KEY READER ROUND IGNITION BARREL
still wont start

do you think if i get an ecu set that the car will run ??

i noticed in teh ecu
it had fault code
this is why i think we should just put new ecu set

try flicking starter manually, could be dodgy body control module.

Iv had dodgy ignition switch on these to. No crank. Get to the back of ign and probe see it it starts and runs. Iv also had avdi tell
me invalid key when it's not so don't pay to much attention to that. Also try ews / dme sync on avdi.

also EWS unit be faulty

I would just buy or visit local scrap yard and re-program it. def do this before buying whole set of ecus

Dave have u tried adding a new key to the ews. Had a client with an intermittent problem sometimes key would only work. Spare key worked fine. I did a scan and came up with the same fault code. Maybe try realligning ews and dme fault between the two units.

it fails to sync that hence why im leaning towards a faulty ecu
either ews or dme
ive done syncs on the same cars before no problems and they fired back up



ps i dont have equipment for adding keys to bmw's guys
well not yet
they come on monday
ordered a couple of pieces from china :o lol

This might be way off base, but in the last six months I have had 3 e46's that have had DEALER replacement keys that have gone out of limits.. Just a quick note, when you program a key to an EWS module, you give it the starting info, then the EWS writes info to the key.. Every time you shut off the key, the EWS sends new data to the key, tells it which roll it is on, the next time you start the car, the EWS looks for the key number and also what roll it is on, the supposed dealer keys weren't accepting the data from the EWS module when you would shut off the car... Programmed new key and the problem went away...
