Hi all
How to reset steering lock to accept new barrel.
I have a golf with faulty ignition barrel/ lock Fails to unlock. I have built new barrel to key and works lovely. bought a new lock for column from VW while attempting to fit the new barrel to lock assembly. I moved the internals of the lock and I think I tripped a anti tamper device. I can not now set the lock in a position where the lock bolt redraws or into a position where it will accept the newly built barrel. I think may be I should not have moved the lock and had it bolted to the column before attempting to fit the barrel.
any one been here before?
How do you reset these locks?

Many thanks
Purdy

Hi, you should remove the whole ignition from the column and what I usually is take the whole ignition apart and remove the inside.. There you will find broken pieces and loose springs, you remove all that and reassemble ignition then it will never do that again or get a new set from you nearest dealer its a common problem on those cars

Hope this will be useful...

If you have removed internal lock parts shown on pic1 you have triggered deadlocking mechanism preventing retraction of steering lock bolt. To release it you need to remove parts shown on pic2,3,4. Common problem of this console- broken wall(very thin) where spring pin(part of steering lock mechanism-pic5) hits. Result- blocked lock.

Awesome will rip it apart tomorrow. I thought the steel side plug would have to come out.
