if you are trying to install a flash image use dreamup
if you are using filezilla to transfer files
tick dhcp in the communication section
reboot the box
your computer will assign a new ip use that
everything should be ok after that

First download the image you want to use and then follow this easy guide:

as challah asked in the post above. How did you try to connect the ethernet cable to the box? was it plugged into a router first or directly plugged from pc to box?

The easiest way i found how to connect via ftp to dreambox was using DCC (Dreambox Contol Center), if you connect via router, it automatically assigns dreambox an ip.
To find it's assigned ip, go into Diagonastics/Statistics in your router setup and fine the ip it has assigned it.
Enter tha in DCC application and click on 'Reconnect'
Then is asks for user/password, these are Root/Dreambox, and you should connect then.
Just google DCC to find and download it.
Best of luck!
