FVDI works without J1850 ADAPTER

Hallo i used yesterday My FVDI to diagnose a Fiesta 5 from 2003 and of course i have no J1850 adapter ive been surprised that he could diagnose the car i ve been said all fords yonger than 2005 wil not work can somebody explain that ?
