What a load of pooh! Virgin have just spent millions on new server upgrade and increased basic to 10meg for IPTV, why would the spend money on a new encryption plus fees year on year. If you look at the latest business results VM subscribers are falling as it is, cut off boxes people will cancel packages and go with Sly.:p

hmmm News of the World, it must be true then... My understanding is that it will take more than just cards it will require new set top box hardware for each subscriber as well... I will not hold my breath on this latest one until i see info from a reputable source...

apparently sky is again threatening V media with a switch off of all sky related channels, sports, movies, sky 1, 2, 3, etc.

These new cards will be rolling new keys dozens of times a day.

Chipped cards, technology has moved on a bit CS, code rolls 24 every 24hrs? it does now sometimes twice a day! no date on paper, and NTL?. I have not seen any hint of a card issue yet, anybody got one? even so CS. Virgin don't like Sly and visa versa contractual issues, so they tolerate each other UK Tv, living etc. Take virgin off sky they don,t have much, take sky off virgin same. Cards are a thing of the past for cable, card only good for Sat at the mo and not much good for that!

still I bet nobody cares about the code rolls, since our boxes update them automatically ;D

What's a code roll? Virgin are more interested in going after dodgy modems, takes up there resorces on the network. I wish people would stop making issues out of sky is doing this cause of the packages it lets virgin use! Its a long standing contractual issue and revenue issue. Virgin can wipe the floor with sky with broadband and on demand services. Sky have been spitting it dummy out for ages about cable and broadband, yet when something goes against them they tant! Ofcom have just slapped and order on sky to allow its premium content to other providers.:proud:

first from this you will see i know very little about cable, but i had cable fitted a few days ago. and they fitted a samsung 2110c box with a red card with there loggo on it. and i bet it's the same card everyone has in there box and if everyone has this card why if they are changing cards did they not issue me a new card

How much of a big deal is it for them to change a ROM or something else to stop free cable??

I always wondered why they just dont change stuff like every 2 weeks or something.. so obviously it must be a big deal to do it which is good for us

This is the longest my cable has lasted(near 9 months) without a hitch.. 2-3 years back they changed stuff like every 5 months

The longer this goes on the more youd think something big is coming up soon

batman44
9th August, 2009, 09:00 PM
I still have my original NTL card and virgin have mentioned nothing about it. I also reckon something big is comming but I don't think its Nag 3. The amount of server power & memory to run alongside IPTV for every subscriber is just to much. Virgin have committed itself for this IPTV but to run smooth enough for rollout it takes at least 100meg as proved in korea, so some time off yet, they are testing a 200mb broadband and samsung have developed the NGTV box to replace V+. :proud:

There is no mention of it on the Cable News section
Cable - Digital Spy (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/completecoverage/cable/)

I thought you said Digital Spy, not a NOTW article about ntl with the publish date covered. As mindcrime points out Martin Mullen went to jail in 2004

Sky are forced to provide Movies and Sports as part of the Ofcom rate card, with Virgin hoping that it will include HD channels by mid 2010. Virgin's deal for the Sky basics runs until 12th June 2011, the same length as Sky's deal for the VMTV channels.

Besides, the NGTV plans also called for an NGCAS, see page 25 of this:
Samsung 3110 (http://www.slideshare.net/Jasmeet_181/samsung-3110-presentation)

There are 3 large IPTV services in the UK (BT Vision, Tiscali TV and Freewire/Inuk), so 100Mb isn't needed.
BT Vision requires a minimum guaranteed broadband line speed of at least 2Mb.

Virgin's IPTV service was only announced for Virgin Media National (non-cabled) areas and has been delayed while Virgin expand the cable network instead.

I dont understand why people rely soley on modified third party receivers for your everyday TV, if you care so much about watching all your programs then get a sub. Nothing lasts forever.

opsmonkey
12th August, 2009, 04:12 PM
i find it funny that all these people who rely just on a modified cable box will all be ringing VM for an upgrade as soon as the expected change comes..

Bit suss when they get hundereds of requested upgrades in a short period.. may as well just say.. "yep i've been using a dodgy box but now it doesnt work i'd like an official sub please.."

what can they do about it? who cares what they think?

Personally, soon as they do i'm off to Freesat or sly and i'll drop all my current subs.

Nagra 3 cracked I know its for satelite but maybe its something? I know its from July as well...

The company started distributing Nagra 3-based smart cards to its subscribers beginning with November 2007, in time seriously crippling Kwak's FTA receiver business, which was no longer able to decode the newly encrypted signals.

According to the indictment, Kwak, known online as "Mr. Viewsat," Phillip Allison, aka "thebroken," and Robert Ward, aka "thedssguy," set on to crack the new encryption. In order to do this, the three contacted a third-party individual, whose name is not disclosed and to whom Kwak promised over $250,000 if he succeeded.

It is also mentioned that Kwak paid for an $8,500 special microscope that was required to analyze the DISH smart cards in order to reverse-engineer their EPROM, referred to as "rom 240." Kwak is also said to have covered other research expenses. It is noted in the indictment that, on April 5, this year, he paid the third party an additional $20,000 for photographs of the smart cards' micro-circuitry.

Like the way the date has been photoshopped out, did it scare anyone? lol.

brand new samsung box to replace my Pace which gave up finally, delivered about 3 weeks ago, i have the Really Really smart card as the other poster mentioned earlier, so no nag 3 or variants here yet either.

Why do people worry so much? I have already had my monies worth from my max V and will be getting a 7000HD before Xmas, if i get 6 months from that aswell, i will still be up in the deal wont i?

so this nag 3 thing is really gonna put an end to unofficial cable receivers? I'm a virgin media cable customer, was planning on buying a dreambox in september for the extra channels but if I do this will I get any time whatsoever out of it?

Well I think only VM can answer that...

Even if you were to get 3-4 months out of it that would pay for the Dreambox and save you the sub money and with the extra channels too

if its still on by Christmas then that has to be a first.. in all the years Ive been getting it free it definitely hasnt lasted more than about 7 months straight without a change.. never mind a year+

They do pick their times for a change like last time was around christmas.. so maybe theyre aiming for the start of the season

Hope Im jinxing this for the better by saying that

EDIT - Damn I just fired up the old analogue box and no more Sly Sports... shit thats bad

ok its final. vm send out a signal that is encrypted AT SOURCE, this is included in the fee they pay, so WHY would they pay AGAIN to replace ALL boxes and cards to re-encrypt the signal!!!!

use a business mind and this makes sense.

@ Sirus. I think you might be talking about Key rolls rather than new encryption methods there my friend, Key rolls although annoying are a minor problem. The rumours about Nagravision 3 are far more deeper reaching than a key roll.

@DCtyper thanks mate, i will now order a nice shiney singing dancing 7000HD (and hope for a better epg in the next firmare release)

Im no expert on encryption methods... although I do know N3 is a different more powerful encryption....

But I just refer to when they go down and they need new stuff put on them.. key rolls or whatever the lingo

I just think its weird its been the best part of the year now without any prob.. a key roll or whatever would kinda put your mind at ease for another while, its been a long time coming
