Solution is find the HW and SW version on label and part number then download an update cd and make update. This update take about 1 hour.
Yesterday i solved one of this units from skoda with succes.

Yes in P.M !I don't know if is allowed here on forum this links!
@ Seby
Yes write this firmware to a blank CD not DVD. Use magic iso .write with lowest write speed. And read instructions on forum and Flash it the radio. It takes about 1 hour.

Only press Setup + eject + info, and insert the CD.After update finish the cd eject automatically ,then restart the radio .If you have skoda must rename 2 files .
Skoda owners
Extract files PQTABLE and SKTABLE from image (use magiciso or ultraiso). Files can be found from path: \VUCI\B101\RNSMIDEC\PROG
Switch the filenames by just renaming SKTABLE to PQTABLE and vice versa
Overwrite the renamed files back to image and save the image. Burn this image to DVD or CD.
Load or reload the Firmware to your RNS-510 using the steps below.
Voil?… buttons are back!
This is example but i don't know the exact what model you have .

I use exactly same procedure as you describe..
Dont know is it normal, but when rns goes into this update mode(SWL image), unit shows status bar of updating gor a moment, then turn off image, for a 10-20 second again ON, and again off then unit turn shutdown and i must power on manualy and agin all process in circle...

My unit restarts several times.Important to not interrupt power.Be patient.
For a B unit probably 3810 is best, not sure.Wait for another member answer.

I found this:
I have a VW RNS510 from 2009:
Deliverypart number: 1T0035680B
HW-Version: H04
SW-Version: 1100
Can I update to this firmware 4020 in one step or do I need to update to another firmware first?
Do I need to recode something with Vag-com? if yes, what do I need to recode?
Thanks in advance,
Sincerly,
Tom.

No recoding required. You upgrade in one step.
attilaa0:I use same version in this days and work ok.
