Hi

I have Philips DVD player that allows me to watch avi files from sd card.

I was wondering if 250gb wd passport (no power) will work if formatted FAT32.

Does anyone use such a large non powered external 2.5inch external drive with success. If so with what dvd player.

Thanks

I'm not sure if this helps much, but I have a Silvercrest (DIVX) DVD player from Lidl and I use it with my 40GB Archos 704. That's formatted FAT32 and I have no problems, whatsoever. The dvd player spec did say less than 1GB IIRC may've been 512MB or even 256MB max compatibility, but before I got the Archos I tried a 1GB stick and that worked so thought what the hell.

The 1GB has no PSU, obviously, but the Archos runs under its own steam.

I'd try my 320GB Maxtor but that's NTFS and almost full, so I don't want to risk any data loss converting on the fly to FAT32.

I think you'll have to use an external source for that sized drive to be safe.

You can't convert NTFS to FAT32 on the fly with an MS OS, only from FAT to NTFS.
Its also worth pointing out that FAT32 doesn't support files over 4GB so you may have to large files into smaller ones.

The Phillips dvp5980 plays from a 2.5" external hdd but needs to be fat32 as said above. The 4gb limit doesnt really come into play as you will probably be watching xvids or divx.
