Hello All,
I wonder if anyone can help?
I have just bought an SV4, and everything seems to going OK, and after quite a palavar have managed to get a 500G Maxtor external Hard Drive attached. Reading through this board and talking to a friend, it has been drummed into me never to (un)plug the USB lead from the back of the SV4 whilst the box is on.
In itself that s fine and I have no problem with that, however (yes, there had to be one), it is not as straight forward as that. After recording some programs I will them want to transfer the files to my Vista computer so I can edit and then author the resultant files before burning them to DVD. My problem is that being in a wheelchair it is not easy for me to get at the back of the SV; and having motor-coordination trouble with my one working hand, me and USBs do not actually get on too well. :-)
Originally, I was going to run an unpowered USB extension lead to the USB lead from the HD. A friend has given me a new USB (A -> B) lead so I do not need to use an extension (thanks bvilleuk). Now what I need to know is, is it the actually act of pulling/inserting the USB lead that will "brick" the SV4, or will it be the same if I pull the mains plug on the drive (unfortunately it does not have a power switch)? If I am just transferring files then that is not a problem as I can just turn the SV off whilst I am unplugging the drive from the lead and connecting the HD up to the computer and then turn the SV back on after connecting the HD back to the USB lead. The main question comes from the fact that I want to leave the USB lead connected to the SV but do not necessarily want to do any recording. For instance, I am not currently watching the T.V. but the HD is connected and powered, so would really like to unplug the HD from the mains.
I hope this is understandable, as though I know what I want/need to ask, I find it hard to explain, even to my friend who knows the situation?
Thanks for any assistance.
