While Nintendo have the sales war between the Wii, PS3 and 360 pretty much sewn up, their online service is languishing miserably in third place. Sure, the breadth of titles offered through Virtual Console is fantastic, but when it comes to playing online games or communicating with friends, Wiiconnect24 is a bit of a sham. Common sense dictates that if you are trailing the competition, you offer the consumer something better.

Not so following Nintendo's press release at GDC 08 that announced the company are to implement a 'Pay and Play' arrangement for gamers hoping to play their Wii friends online. While Microsoft charge Xbox Live users ?40 a year for the privilege, few would argue that the service is not great value for money and Sony's online model is completely free. With both Sony and Nintendo trailing Microsoft in the online arena, you would have hoped that Nintendo could offer something a little more substantial than simplistic online service being enjoyed by DS owners (and Pokemon and Mario Strikers Charged players) for free.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii are both due for UK release within the coming year, so let's cross our fingers and hope that what will arguably be the Wii's greatest multiplayer titles will be on the shelf before Nintendo starts charging for something that has been free up to this point.
