If you intend to update your Iphone 3GS to the latest firmware (3.1), you will lose the ability to jailbreak and unlock it, there is no hack out at this precise moment, although the Dev Team are working on this.
If you are running 3.0.1 or below then leave it at that until a fix is out to jailbreak and unlock the 3.1 firmware.

PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE THE 3G WITH THE 3GS AS THE 3G CAN BE JAILBROKEN ON THE 3.1 FIRMWARE......
