View Full Version : Renault Kangoo power steering loss at high rev

A new issue with the Kangoo 2006 1.9D. Power steering works fine while you drive on the street at normal speed, but as soon as revs get higher than around 3000rpm, power steering stops working completely, it even does it if the car is not moving and you rev it in neutral. Turning ignition off and on again, and it starts working. It has an electric pump, liquid is new. No related faults in delphi or can clip.

A few notes on the car:

It has no speed sensor, its broke and it kinda hard getting the same one on my small town, so we ordered it but it will take some time to arrive.
Original electric fuel pump was replaced for a mechanical one, and with this, some sensors were removed. Left a few permanent fuel related faults, but it still runs fine.

What I find weird is that it always fails at >3000rpm, if you keep it lower it never stops working. Should I assume the power steering pump is bad or is there something else I could check?

Engine ECU operates the powersteering relay depending on the speed, battery voltage, fault codes..and so on...
Since you no longer need that ecu(mechanical pump) you might want to put some kind of switch to engage the relay...

Would like to second above but add

1) pressure switch faulty?
2) over pressureing? Bent pipe?
3) is the dynamo overcharging
4) here in uk most car parts arrive next day

You mean replacing the cable that gives the relay the signal to engage (I dont have the diagrams but it probably comes from the ecu right now) so it stays on all the time with ignition on, regardless of what the ecu says? Sounds like an idea, will keep it in mind in case we can find another solution.

Thanks MH, my brother (the owner of the car) did call me to say he suspects the dynamo may be overcharging (didn't tell me why), so we will checking that and all your other suggestions this weekend.

Also check fluid level correct, Opel have low level sensor
