Is it possible to take a used key from one car and reprogram it to a new car? If only some can is there a way to tell?

Edit: After reading a bit about programmable transponders, it looks like the have a value written to the transponder from the manufacturer and an OBD tool will write this value into the car so it can start it. Is this correct across the board with transponder keys?

it's depends on the transponder car/type.
When the car locking the TP then forget it. BTW the TP's are cheap.. and almost always you have to preprogramm the TP-s before using (like TP24-Skoda)

Sounds like you have years of study ahead. Nothing is across the board !

Many keys are 'locked' to the car once programmed
