A Labour MP has launched a campaign to get at least five top Premier League football matches screened on terrestrial TV each season.
Martyn Jones, MP for Clwyd South, launched his Football Free Campaign to help the average football fan afford to see football.
The campaign will also be music to the ears of many licensees who feel they have been priced out of screening football by Sky.
"It was hoped that the pressure exerted by the European Commission upon the Premier League and Sky for monopolising TV rights in 2005 would produce a result, which was more beneficial to the average supporter, meaning live football might be shown on terrestrial television," he said.
"However rights were simply sold to another private company, Setanta. The result has been higher prices for fans wishing to watch Premier League games.
"The division of TV rights has also created greater costs for publicans who are being continually overcharged to the point where they cannot afford to televise all Premier League games."
