Can anyone help? I have bought an ELM327 USB unit to allow me to work an my Peugeot HDi, but I cannot get the unit to connect to the OBD2 socket in the car.
I have a feeling that I may have do usb port settings,
If so I am not really sure of how to do that

What year is the car?

If its before 2004 being a diesel it might not be EOBD compliant.

And what software are you using?

my car is 2001 406 HDi I have been told that the car is OBD2 compliant. the software I am using is Scantool and digimoto and neither connect to the car. When I connect to the car obd socket the red light comes on the unit but none of the Tx and RX lights com e on which is making me think that the laptop usb is guilty
My ELM327 is ver 1.3a

You sure its definately EOBD/OBD2 compliant?

If its an issue with the USB or ELM then the software will say that the interface cannot be found etc.

Your best bet is to use the ELM in hyperterminal and try to connect to the car using AT commands. More information on this is on the ELM327 datasheet which is available from the elm electronics website here http://www.elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM327DS.pdf

try something like.. (enter after each line)

ATL1
ATTP5
01 00

and see what the responses are. If you get connect error your car probably isnt EOBD/OBD2. If you dont get the ELM327 echoing locally in hyperterminal it might be the interface is stuffed or the FTDI drivers are messed up.

Theres some useful stuff here, you might find SNterm easier to use than hyperterminal. Also there is FTDI clean which removed the FTDI drivers from your machine.

Good luck

2001 diesel is unlikely to be compliant to EOBD. Not required until 2004. It's never compliant with OBD2 because the car was never sold in the USA.

You must have both the PC <--> ELM327 <--> CAR connected before yoy have signal on to test.
Look on the pc devicemanager for port/virtuel comport/
this comport you must setting in the program for odbtest.

ELM327 tester:

this version 1.1.0.5 is wrong for v1.2a PIC18F2580 clone, command to set protocol to automatic is not ATSP 00 but ATSP A0
this is right version 1.1.0.4 http://www.scantool.net/scantool/downloads/5/stnterm.exe

anyway, thanks bram380 for letting me know this new software

My Peugeot 306 2.0 HDi connects to an Elm327, have to change com port & baud rate to get it to work with some software, I usually have ign on - not sure if its needed though.

hi guys!
I'm new to OBD stuff...:(
Just bought a scannes based on an elm327 clone, with pic18f2585, but it did not connect... I've tried to connect to it using hyperterminal (with just the computyer side connected), but I get no response :banghead:. So comes the doubt... Can I test it this way, or or do I need the car side to be connected even to test using at commands? will the clones accept the same commands as original elm327? By the way, I tried ATZ. Thanks in advance!

interface must be connected to car or powered with +12v on pin16 and ground on pin4 of interface's obd2 connector (you can use 230v-12v ac/dc adapter)
then use stnterm some posts above
