Sky today launched the first commercial TV service for Apple?s iPhone.

It allows subscribers to watch Sky News, Sky Sports and ESPN channels live on their handset for the first time. The service costs ?6 per month, and will be available to non-Sky subscribers.

Although unofficial free TV services are available for the iPhone, the Sky application is believed to be the first to be officially backed by a broadcaster.

Tom Dunmore of Stuff magazine said: 'The iPhone has such a good screen that it is actually a great experience to watch television on it.

'If Sky can ensure the quality of the service is good enough, this could be the catalyst for mobile phone TV to really take off.'

Sky said it had only made its most popular channels available but it was planning to add more in the future.

The service is available only via a wireless internet connection because of restrictions from mobile operator O2, and it is not known whether Orange, which begins selling the iPhone today, will allow the service.

Meanwhile, a hacker yesterday claimed to be the first to have infected the iPhone with a computer virus. The bug spreads between devices, changing the background ?wallpaper? image to a photo of Eighties pop star Rick Astley.

Australian student Ashley Towns, 21, said he wanted to show that 'anyone can easily hack into an iPhone'.
