My drive is bricked and i don't have the key to put on another drive. I've been doing lots of reading and it seems you can retrieve the key by lifting the tsop and reading it in a willem. I haven't got one of these and its not really worth my while buying one so is there any other way to retrieve the key. or do i just have a media player for the time being.

Just a dvd drive for the time being mate. There will be services close by to you that offer key extraction. Have a look about worth paying for as an xbox as dvd player is quite expensive.
What drive is it you think you've bricked?

Hitachi 79 m8. It wont open or close. I put the cable in upside down for a sec.It went in too easy lol. Nothing happened but the tray wont open so i assume it was that.

The power cable?
You may have fried the board. Does it not show at all on your pc?
How are you powering the drive?

Everything appears as normal on the tv. Can go through the menu etc but when i open tray it just says opening and nothing happens. when i press again it says closing If it was the mobo wouldn't it smoke or give a sign, a red light or something ? Everything is as it was except for the tray opening, or so it seems.

It would somke but its not a lot. You would have to have the drive open at the time to see it.
You using the 360 to power i assume.
I would suggest hooking it up and see if you can detect the drive in JF. Then theres every chance you might get the key.
I have had hitachis in the past that wont open with xbox but the connectivity kit ejects them no problem.

When i run JF, in the Hitachi tab on the left side, it detects the drive but on the right side it shows only the pc dvd drive in the dropdown box. When i click send mode b it seems to read the Hitachi drive giving some text at the bottom.
When i click refresh list it then says no Hitachi drive found.
EDIT: I'm using a pci sata card in my pc.

iff it detects good news mate your drives not bricked
it would just be a drive problem i have a drive that opens when it feels like so you can read the key so its not a expencive dvd player quiet yet best thing you can do is read up on it or send your drive to someone that can read keys mate :)

yea iff your drive was bricked when you connect drive back to the 360 it would come up with 1 red light :) so we know it can't be bricked iff u need to open the drive and you can't through power take it apart from underneath the drive and there is a manual release arm :)

Bulldog.
I have located someone who can retrieve the firmware off the PCB. This will inturn make the pcb useless so you will need a new drive. I have sent you a pm m8.

Its a kinda catch 22.
Step 1 get a dump of the nand
Step 2 realise its encrypted and you need the cpu id to decrypt it.
Step 3 figure out you need to use a boot disk to get the cpu id
step 4 realise you cant boot the disk because you dont have the dvd key...
Step 5 curl into the foetal position and weep for a few days (i can confirm this step really works)
In order to obtain the DVD key from the keyvault stored in the nand you already need the DVD key...
Like i said catch 22 :(
Im thinking there might be a way around this that would only work with unbanned consoles (you will need live access to download a tool) but details are lengthy at this point and it might not even be possible.

Yeah guess he got 2 options.
Try this PCB read for key.
Infecous chip (i hear allows any key)
Could wait to see what comes up in future so maybe 3
