u can try with elm327 - it's cheap, have all OBDII protocols(iso, can, bus etc) there is lots of software for it (also free software)

ELM 327 CAR DIAGNOSTIC CODE READER SCANNER OBD2 TOOL on eBay (end time 17-Nov-09 19:42:21 GMT) (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ELM-327-CAR-DIAGNOSTIC-CODE-READER-SCANNER-OBD2-TOOL_W0QQitemZ290367808197QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Di agnostic_Tools_Equipment?hash=item439b4522c5)

What type of cars do you want to read (Make, model, year) and what type of engines (petrol, diesel)?
Which part of the world do you live (Usa, Europe, Japan, or rest of the world)?

OBD2 is only used in the USA and Canada. So where do you live?

Andy, I had a lot of laughs reading the support list.
There are a lot of cars on it that definitely do not support any form of OBD2, EOBD, or JOBD.
Cars like a 1997 Fiat Marea or 1996 BMW's in Turkey and Italy.
Or Opel Astra's from 1997 in Hungary or Lithuania, i doubt even if either one has a front oxygen sensor and a catalyst.
My favourite is the Opel Frontera Diesel 1996 measured in Portugal.

in EU after 1999 every petrol car and after 2004 every diesel car must have OBDII protocol.

OBD2 is a thing from across the big ocean. It is only used in the USA and Canada, it has no meaning whatsoever in Europe. In Europe we have EOBD which is similar but not the same as OBD2.
The majority of the petrol engines in passenger cars became compliant in 2001, the majority of the diesel engines in passenger cars in 2004.
There are exemptions for heavy vehicles, vehicles with 7 or more seats and commercial vehicles. The last vehicles to become complaint are those with engines powered by some form of gas (LPG or NCG) in 2006 and commercial vehicles with diesel engines in 2007.

U wright about dates:) what about communication protocols, is that not the same?

Basic protocols are the same, but they are not completely the same.
One of the differences is the baudrate on Can-communication. OBD2 in the USA only allows one speed - 500kb. EOBD in Europe allows 2 speeds - 250kb and 500kb.
But the protocols make up about 10% of the standard, there are many, many more differences.

You can use the ELM327 to do a 97 marea for sure, its just not obd, eobd. You just change the ECU address and connect using fiats version of kwp2000.

The above works on pre-obd mk2 puntos as well. Fiats are usually at 10h.

Not much software actually does this though, its a hyperterminal job.

Usually with a bit of tinkering anything fiat/alfa/lancia from about 97 on will work on an elm327, you will have to make your own 3pin cable for some of them thats all.

Seem to think the Cu*ntera is a mechanical system!

no shit, but did have a merc SLK in (1997 model), used the 15 dozen adaptors on the diagnostic scanner and found it WAS eobd friendly, it squealed like a pig, pig that reminds, a certain person still hasen't replied to my text msg, bout some kind of 'incident'

2 out of the 3 diesels are mechanical, yes.
The third is a 2.5L diesel with a MSA15 system.

Andy, some more laughs.
A Vauxhall Vectra B gasoline from 1997 tested in the UK. Protocol is listed as VPW, but all Vectra's in the UK in 1997 use Iso.
Or the 1996 Skoda Felicia in germany and the 1996 Seat Cordoba from Spain. Or several 1998 Renault diesels.
Another one of my personal favourites: a 1996 206 petrol from France. Neat trick as the 206 was not sold before 1998.
Don't believe everything you read.
