Just reading this PC GAMER'S SECTION and am amazed to find no reference to X3 !!
Created by Germany's EGOSOFT team, the game[s] are brilliant.
Best Space Trading, Fighting, Building,Thinking series of the lot!!
If I remember correctly, the series begins with X BEYOND THE FRONTIER, XTENTION, X2 THE THREAT, X3 TERRAN CONFLICT and X3 REUNION.
My personal fav was X2 THE THREAT -- lots of MODS available and a flourishing enthusiasts website.......
Great game - kept me awake for many a night !!
All of the above games are cheaply available from FLEABAY -- [pals who've torrented them haven't had much joy] and to be honest, without the LARGE printed manual your going to be flying around in circles wondering why nothing is working......
Demos are available on the Egosoft Website for all games so you can have a gawp and see if it will run on your Motor!!
Graphically stunning [with game-play] as well -- you'll need a reasonably tuned Motor to run them at full speed [thought of course you can turn down the graphic depth, shadows etc etc to get the game to run on your ZX 81......]

P.s. They knock games like PRIVATEER etc into a cocked hat :)
