A British-designed TV that streams the BBC iPlayer, YouTube and other websites direct to the screen is to go on sale ahead of Christmas in a UK first.

The cutting-edge LCD set, called the iViewer, comes from manufacturer Cello Electronics and is to be sold through Marks & Spencer.

The fact the innovation will be available through M&S is evidence of the chain's efforts to move beyond its heartland of clothes and food into technology.

The iViewer set links into the home's wireless internet service through a dongle, the sort of device many people use to connect their laptops to the web.

It also doubles as a digital photo-frame, allowing instant access to any pictures stored on the home computer when connected by wireless link.

There is also a USB port, which means video and images saved to a USB memory stick can also be viewed.

The TV is priced at ?399 for the 26in option and ?499 for the higher-specification 32in version, which offers full high definition images.

Currently, cable TV customers with Virgin can access the BBC iPlayer direct on their sets, however this service comes as part of a monthly package.

It is also possible to stream the iPlayer to existing TV sets via games consoles such as the Nintendo Wii. However, this is the first set that has its own web link and software that is built-in to the technology.

The M&S iViewer is manufactured by Cello Electronics, which is based in the north of England and has been identified as one of the fastest growing UK technology companies.

It sells its own brand products via retailers including the Co-op, Netto, Sainsbury?s, JD Williams, Express Gifts, Bennetts Retail, Tesco (Southern Ireland), Staples and Office Depot. It also also owns the Neon brand, which is sold exclusively through Morrisons.

Separately, Cello manufactures own brand products for the likes of Marks & Spencer, Littlewoods, Grattan, Next and German brand SEG.
