View Full Version : Problems with E90 CAS3 - now bricked

Hi all, Ive been struggling for a few weeks now with a problem:

I tried to run the CAS>>DME sync in Inpa and also ISTAd to clear the fault for my CAS and DME to communicate, but it failed everytime saying "incorrect start value during start value matching".

I purchased a spare CAS with the same hardware number and wrote my dump to it, but the car would not communicate with it

Tonight I've dumped from my original CAS that would not start the car to check the readout, all looked ok to me, but now I've messed up with the soldering iron and damaged the CAS so it won't respond.

Can I purchase another matching CAS, and write my dump to it? Or does that not work? It is possible that the second CAS I purchased was faulty, or maybe I'm doing something wrong!

Edit: Ive reflashed the original CAS and managed to get it responding again

Thanks for any help you can give me :)

Write back the dumped data onto the corresponding donor CAS module. And confirm if your keys are still present in the CAS dump, then perform alignment

Thank you autodiagservices, so all key data is also stored in the OL15Y chip too?

I might have to purchase a third CAS to have another go.

I reflashed the original CAS again and the car is responding again now, I checked all the contacts with a multimeter and everything is correct, I just can't get the EWS error to clear, the CAS and DME will not align at all.

I am wondering if I've damaged the ribbon or something that plugs into the CAS.

I am going to try update the CAS daten to the latest with WINKFP. If anyone else has any ideas please let me know, maybe taking the EWS protection out of the DME is an option?

If your car cranks, but not start it means the key (and of course ribbon cable) is OK.
You just have to make sync CAS and DME.
If you canīt you have wrong I-level in DME or CAS. So flash both with same I-level (or both with last).

Cool thank you Marek, I'm not sure what I-level is so I will have a google of that now, thanks for the lead :) I will let you know how I get on.

I flashed the latest daten to my CAS, it didn't solve it either but was worth a try.

I'll do some Googling on I-level, hopefully it's something I can do with the Software I have and the K+Dcan cable

I have a feeling I might have a CAS3+ encrypted CAS, and that might be why the sync does not work (EWS4).

Your quick and easy way to get out of your problem, buy an ECU & lock set Ģ150.00

I am just trying to find a way to get my ISN from my original dump. I have a feeling I might have a CAS3+ encrypted CAS, and that might be why the sync does not work (EWS4).

I've seen a tool called VVDI2 which seems to be able to extract the ISN from the encrypted original dump I have, maybe I have to do that? If anyone has any pointers on how to compare the ISN, or if i'm on the wrong path please let me know :)

Can you get the ISN from DME? if so then what is it?

wouldn’t I need the matching CAS too? I would like to work out the issue, sorry for all the questions on this, it’s been a steep learning curve and not the easiest car to learn on

Quick question - I upgraded my CAS datens After my last dump.

If I restore that dump to the CAS, will it downgrade?

Is the firmware stored in the OL15Y? Or on another chip?

I also flashed the same version to a spare CAS, and it works well in the car. It's good to know I have a spare CAS now too :)

Thanks for everyone's support in this :)

Connecting with VVDI 1.2.2 was a fail.
CAS software too new, even though I downgraded it to the original version that came on the car.
DME CAS Sync also was denied in VVDI.

I am thinking next of downgrading the CAS Even further, currently searching online to which version is recommended. I am currently on 9395657 now.

I think that VVDI is just giving me the ISN from the CAS, can anyone else confirm? Would that explain why it starts only once?

can you not read the isn from the dme with your tool

I can't unfortunately, it looks like the VVDI2 software is only 1.2.2 with my FVDI

Right - I think I might have the ISN :) (I hope?)

https://i.ibb.co/GQ1xWxh/IMG-4502.jpg (https://ibb.co/yFMf6f3)

This comes from VVDI2 using a 2018 FVDI.

I exported the dump, wrote it to the chip and the car started once.

When turned off, it wouldn't start again, is that normal?

ISN is reading as:
4CBEAF4CBEAF4CBEAF4CBEAF4CBEAF4C

That looks like a strange ISN to me though, is it supposed to repeat itself like that?

CAS ISN is FFFFFFFF .......

CAS ISN is FFFFFFFF .......

Thanks - It seems that this version of VVDI is not good enough :)

I have just ordered a CGDI Prog BMW MSV80 it seems to have good reviews and covers the functions I need too. Plus they seem to be active on these forums too.

Ill update my progress, hopefully it will work this time, I miss my car.

Did you make a copy of the original CAS?
If so, send a file.
Since the ISN would have to be obtained from DME!

I did, but it turns out the original DUMP is also ISTAP too :(

I think I have been working with the ISN from the CAS, so that is why it would only start once.

As soon as my CGDI arrives I will get the ISN from the DME :)

Thanks for your help

My CGDI has finally arrived!

It took a while to activate, but I now have all the activations available.

I don't know why everytime I swap CAS and re-write the dump, it will start just once.

Brother, it seems like you've taken this massive journey to do AKL very far.

You have VVDI2, it's simple. RESTORE original dump to CQS. Choose "file make key" option and tick the box 16 or 64 attempts to start.

Program the key with programmer and try starting. When it doesn't , put key in programmer and click the window where it says "not start". After a few attempts it'll fire up. Done.

If you try doing the same with OBD the tool will mess up your CAS eeprom which happened to me. Car will start once but then you'll have a A0AA code in CAS.
