It matters a lot! But in the case of this 93c46 the reading only swaps the bytes... Read in 8 bits usually if it has an 'a' suffix, for example "93c46a" or if it is a series "93lc46", with pin 6 connected to gnd. It's not a general rule, but they're usually set up like this.
