Amro Elbadawi, 14, crawled into a health centre bleeding heavily from his neck after a row with a friend apparently escalated into violence.

Paramedics tried to save his life but the teenager died in hospital about an hour later.

Detectives said a 16-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder was a "long-standing" friend.

They are investigating whether Amro was killed with his own weapon in an attack as he walked home from school in Queen's Park, west London.

Detective Superintendent Colin Lee, who is leading the investigation, said one line of inquiry was Amro died after a play fight went tragically wrong.

He said: "Obviously the death of anyone under such circumstances is an absolute tragedy. We would appeal to people: 'Do not carry knives'."

The schoolboy was one of two teenagers stabbed to death in the capital on Thursday.

In a separate incident, Devoe Roach, 17, of Stoke Newington, died after being attacked in Stamford Hill, north London.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

The deaths mean there have now been a total of 11 teenage murders in the capital this year
