Hi guys,

im totally new in this topic. I would like to learn about ecu programming. In the past i did alot of codings and diagnostics with ncs expert and inpa or ista on bmw cars.

I wanted to start with the Kess and Ktag (I think it will be the clone version for the beginning). I watched a lot of videos how to read and write ECUs.
There are different ways to do it. The software looks very simple to use. But i still have some (beginner) questions:

1. What are the differences in the reading/writing modes (OBD, bench, boot, bdm, tricore, more???)
2. Is every reading a backup or is it only possible in a specific mode?
3. How to recover after something failed? Do i need to open the ecu?
4. For example: a bmw e39 535i 5mt with 175kw can have the ecu M5.2 or M7.2. How do i know which is the correct one?
5. If you have an ecu and you dont know from which car it is. Is it possible to know it without opening it?

Do i need more then kess and ktag? My biggest concern is what to do if flashing fails and how to fix it ...

I know there are a lot of questions and i really will be thankful for your answers.
