If VCDS-Lite wont connect to your car then either you need a can-bus interface or there's something wrong with your car or your interface.
What's the model-year of the car?
Can you connect to any module of your car?
Can you connect to other cars?

Audi a3 8p 2004 1.9tdi. Its connects to other cars okay it will only connect to the engine module of my car and im not sure if vcds lite is listed for audi a3 8p? It worked fine on my seat leon 1.8t. i have also got delphi 2015 it wont let me go into basic setting to do the steering assist

I have a VW Passat B6 2006/7 y 2.0Tdi. With VCDS Lite 1.2 I can connect to the engine control unit and nothing else.
Everything works with a hex-can cable.
Delphi/Autocom/WOW (clone) is cool but it's a universal tester and doesn't have to do everything.
Alternatively, change the "baud rate" from 0 to 9600 in VCDS Lite.

Well, you need full VCDS + a can-interface for this car.

That is probably a problem in the Delphi software, not in your car. VCDS most likely will let you do the basic setting for the steering assist.
