I've heard tuxvision is a good program but I've never used it myself.

If I'm recording anything, I'll simply use the direct record function and record to the shared folder on my PC. I rarely record anything, if I miss it, I download it lol so not really looked into the best recording solution.

If it's setup for direct recording, you just press 2 buttons on the remote and it records to the shared folder on the PC. It's in .ts format which is a form of mpeg. Most burning software will recognize that but it would convert to dvd format before burning.

Once you've got the file, you can do what you like with it. :)

What do you mean? How can you check if what is?

Check to see if you can direct record?

There's a guide here for setting up direct recording...

Yes all dreambox have the ability to record to a shared folder.

Depends on what functions the image has though. On some, it's only nGrab recording, others have more depending on what the creators wanted to include.

I have set up a shared folder on my pc for direct recording by following
your handy guide (Thanks for that) and now that I can record I was
wondering if it is at all possible to playback directly through the dreambox.
I can see the recordings in the files menu but when I press ok on the
selected file the screen turn's black and my remote is locked out, although
I can hear the audio from my recording's and I can see the file being uploaded across the network.
I was wondering if I am lacking some kind of plugin or something.

Hi I just wanted to say I sorted my own problem. It turns out if you press the
blue button (Plugins) there is an option "Recover Recording EIT".
If you select this it checks your mounted PC folder and your recordings can
then be accessed from the main menu if you select File Mode, then press the
green button (movies) then you can select your recording and it plays back through your tv without need for converting or burning to dvd.
I am afraid I cant tell you which image I have as it came pre installed,if it
helps the menu says enigma on the bottom left corner I suspect this may be the name of the image although that is just a guess.
Hope this is usefull to someone.:tee:

Glad you got it working they way you want Cyberbob!

Enigma is the base code for most images. The bootup screen usually gives a good clue as to what image is on the box.

If it has Recover Recording EIT in the blue button menu it sounds like a DiorJ image to me but could easily be Gemini.

You can also play mpeg2 files directly this way ;)

I use Ultra Video converter to convert my .avi files as I find the built in VLC a bit buggy. You can also watch the video your converting whilst it is converting! Usually takes around 15 mins to convert a full .avi to mpeg2.
