I (the wife actually) have a C3 1.4 turbo diesel with a noisy gearbox.
I have not found a number on it yet but from the Internet it should be 20CQ 87, 88 or 95
I find the gear ratios on this thing really annoying. I am constantly having to change into first as it won't pull away in second. I could do with a lower ratio diff (or gearbox) or even a higher ratio one so that it does not sit just between first and second when going uphill.
I am torn between replacing the bearings, buying a used box the same and buying a used box with better ratios.
Anyone got any links to the ratios of these boxes and maybe what mods I may need to fit a different numbered box from the original.

Like this you mean:

Life is too short to start that caper. :)
No spigot bearing on this car. No wonder the bloody main shaft input bearing packs up.

Service box might be a good place to find the ratio's?
You should always use 1st gear to pull away, that's its purpose .... Saves wearing the clutch/dual mass & gearbox!?

I think you mean use first gear to set off, I always do.
Pulling away is not dependent on any particular gear it is dependent on speed and the need for first gear is at too high a speed.
The reason is mainly due to turbo lag, it has a very slow turbo, all the turbo diesel C3s have.

Right. This is getting a bit desperate now. Faten smoked the clutch so that is certainly having to happen soonish.
Information:
VIN: vf7sc8hr4ba588687
Gearbox number 20cq88
There are lots of 20cq88 gearboxes on ebay and other places at good prices but it seems that the number does not define the gearbox only the outside.
The 20cq88 seems very common on the smaller petrol cars, 1200 cc (mine is 1400 cc diesel). I suppose one of those would fit but do not want to end up with a car that will not set off or go over 50 MPH.
I need gear ratio information for the various different innards and are the boxes the same with just a different differential?
I can fit a bearing kit but am concerned that it may not make the gearbox quiet so would rather replace the box.

Hmm, that won't help. A random car may not have a 20CQ88 gearbox.
I need one that for sure has a 20CQ88 gearbox as well as being in the list above.
Noodle baked proper with this.
