51 plate astra 1.8l. was driving down the motorway and all of a sudden temp guage just dropped and stopped working, also fans came on ,cooling fan and air con fan, now fans constantly on when ignition is put on, and still no temp guage, any help would be gratefull. thanks

Probably temperature sensor defective or connection loose and some ecu switches on the fans just to be sure the engine doesn't overheat.

wonder if temp switch and fan control on same switch/sensor
old toyota when switch went it would go into protection mode better with than without.,problem then is flat battery.

temp sensor is new i have replaced it. spoke to someone they say it could be a fan module by underside of passenger wing could be faulty, but would this make the temp guage faulty,as i thought this came straight from temp sensor ?.

Or a wiring problem?
Take the car to a dealer and have the fault codes read from the cooling fan module.

You will need to talk to engine cooling ecu, has a light that looks like a radiator come on? Or if you switch ignition on , when ignition light are on does the light that looks like a radiator light up at all?

The engine cooling ecus are located behind left hand side headlight and they get all the muck from the road on them and corrode, ive done , quite a few m8, there about ?100 from dealer and plug and play m8. Something for you to check m8



ps dont take to dealer, use op-com to speak to engine cooling ecu, check plug as well on engine cooling ecu they corrode like mad m8.

Just to Add with OldFord and Obdmaster try to read in Engine ECU live data for Coolant Temprature Sensor whats it's readings are like.

I would agree that engine coolant module is at fault,this was a crazy design right from the word go,it is fitted in a prime location for water ingress,there are two main multiplugs on unit which can be tight to remove so be carefull not to damage,if you are lucky simply by removing and refitting multiplugs may be enough to clear corrosion,check all pins for corrosion though.if fault still there and wiring ok,replace module,Opcom is a great pc based diag tool that would give you specific dtc information and also allow you to run actuator tests on all fans and instrument temp guage.

i used opcom and it comes up with temp sensor high circuit. have checked wiring from temp sensor all fine and the temp sensor new. thanks for all your help

Is that in engine ecu m8, or engine cooling m8?

When using op-com did you speak to:
1. Engine cooling ecu
2. Engine ecu.


Where did you get this fault code from m8?

You want to check fault codes in engine cooling ecu m8, if no communication see when you just turn ignition on if the engine cooling light is lit, my money is it wont be. Then using autodata check feeds to engine cooling ecu. My money is on the engine cooling ecu being duff let me know how you get on m8.

hi i waswondering did the engine managment light come on also? if you have acess to a fault reader it would be worth running a scan

Thankyou for the compliment m8. I usually get reset ecus off a guy i know. All you would need to program it is OPCOM and security code for vehicle. If you dont know security code, you have two options:

1. to read tms370 and post and i will tell you code.
2. Read vin from immobiliser unit using OPCOM, and order from dealer. I say read vin from unit as may have had already donor ecus?


Or buy second hand immobiliser unit, chips ecu,s from same donor vehicle. If you need mans phone no. for reset ecu pm me m8.
