Hi as some of you may know just ordered a MVP key maker and tacho universal from ecutool the next item on my list is programmer and solder station.
Okay I have a Willem 4.5 used for cable stuff but this does not have slots for 24c/93c series chips so the first question is are there adapters for this or is it cheaper to buy a new programmer.
I only want a basic one for 93c/24c as I am just staring out getting some practice so don't want to invest in an x prog or upa just yet! Have been looking at
*NEWEST* Willem EPROM Programmer PCB50 EEPROM BIOS PIC on eBay (end time 20-Feb-10 12:14:31 GMT) (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEWEST-Willem-EPROM-Programmer-PCB50-EEPROM-BIOS-PIC_W0QQitemZ250578262695QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_BOI _Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET?hash=item3a57a0 daa7)

Next question which solder station what do you guys recommend must have hot air (for removal) and solder (To Install) so was looking at Aoyue 968 But confused as to which staion to get and which solder and flux to use also? Any thoughts or comments on this station or recommendations well received
Thanks Guys

As for the programmer i think like someone said:

"UPA-USB it's a musta have"

UPA is a must have, but no programmer is sufficient for all your needs. You just need to start somewhere and buy what looks interesting to you.

...just in case...every time you are working with a chips ground yourself and solder tip with alligator clips to good ground point. Doing so will avoid static discharge that kill your device. just to make sure......:dontknow:

Got a Kada852D+ and happy with the hot air part but the iron is poor quality. Not bad for the price tough.

Also bought this magnifying lamp (http://www.pcb-soldering.co.uk/index.php?target=products&product_id=32) (its actually a good size looks small on the pic but its not)
And this soldering tip (http://www.pcb-soldering.co.uk/index.php?target=products&product_id=104)

I think HOTAIR is something that not real< sounds to be the right hardware for newbees....

Before you unsoldered an atmega or 29F800 there will be blown away some resistors an other pieces....

If you wanna start good and cheap...(cheap because you dont have to replace an ECU for 800 euro...) search for an ERSA rework station with desolder clamp, you heat only that part you want to take off PCB,and you pic it up in one only instant...no risk...no problems...

All components can be held in place on pcb with a roll of Kapton tape !!!Cover all area including any plastic etc .I have used it for years With steinel heat gun .Have taken of and replaced 400 pin chips with it .A good flux is good for reflowing the chip on fitting .Alpha Metals produce some of the best flux paste

ERSA is very expensive hot air stations used correctly
with the adaptors and without rushing should be ok

Yes. Me to i take them off with air,but the question is for newbee,so will he be able handle it?

I don't see why not, he's got to start somewhere and learn somehow.

I'd recommend getting a pile of old junk boards to practice with - any self respecting geek should have a drawer full of old and/or broken stuff that will do. Just keep going until you've got a very good success rate at both taking the chips off (and putting them back on again) without blowing other stuff off the board or damaging the tracks etc.

There's also some stuff called 'chip quick' that's supposed to be good, never used it myself, but looks interesting (if a little expensive).

Regarding soldering stations, how much of this are you planning to do? The expensive ones are good if you need reliability and serviceable parts. Cheap ones are probably fine if you're only going to be doing the odd job with it here and there (or for learning), you can always upgrade later. Just make sure you get a good selection of 'nozzles' and 'bits'.

PICkit 3 Debug Express is a must have for PIC lovers because its cheap (about 55€), fast and pratical.

The compiler (HTSoft) and the development software (MPLAB IDE ) are free.

You can also use it for debug and it comes with a very nice development board based on the PIC18F45k20.

You can program 8 bit, 16bit and 32bit uC - Also I believe that you can programm ALL PIC uC.

For debug, you'll need some extra adaptors but for programming you have all acessories.

PICkit 3 Debug Express (http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=1406&dDocName=en538340&redirects=pickit3) -> programmer

Embedded C Compilers and Tools for Software Development: HI-TECH Software (http://www.htsoft.com/) -> compiler (there are others)

MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=1406&dDocName=en019469&part=SW007002) -> development sofware

Just with the adaptors youre showing i became from some DIY Customer some niche burned PCB around the place where was once place for a PLCC32 (vag ecu,old tdi 90hp)...almost all circuits burned...and also PCB burned up to 2nd layer:congrats:

Thats why i say for newbees:hmmmm2:

Hi, I use aluminum foil instead of scotch. Protects the other components a bit of heat.

you burned the pcb because you put the temperature to high... i have 400C... and i cand stai with hot air gun all day

p.s. i have that adaptors...

yes agree totally burnt pcb = too hot too quick

you need to take time you cannot rush this sort of thing or you will also burn a whole in your pocket lol

I dont know how many chips Ive sucessfully removed with painstripper heatgun, never broke or burnt anything good, its all about time and as said protect around the area with abit of foil!! Search youtube and breajk open all your old radios etc thats how I learnt.
