hi there, from what I have heard using the nexiq usb adapter, there are problems with trying to regen or run a data log, due to the fact that is does not use a dual data link like the cat com II, could any one verify this?
At work I always use the CatCom II , and have not had too much experience with the Nexiq adapter.
I do however want to buy one since it will work with everything such as cummins, cat, allison, bendix, and the list goes on from what i have heard.

If USB link drivers are installed, the nexiq will work in dual data link with CAT ET. With ET open go to 'UTILITIES' then 'PREFERENCES' then 'COMMUNITCATIONS' from the drop down menu pick 'RP1210 DEVICE' check off 'ENABLE DUAL DATA LINK SERVICE'.

Now most important, in the same window click the 'ADVANCED' box and now pick ****USB-link-NEXIQ Technologies USB -Link****** from the drop down menu.

If your laptop is bluetooth you can configure it for that too if you want but there is much more to the set up.

As for the cummins program it does not ask for dual data.

I use the USB link for both Cat and Cummins and have performed regens with them both.

Nexiq USB link works perfect with all engine, ABS, and transmissions. I also use Inline 2 wich is more cheaper and also works perfect with all the programs just a little bit slower. you can find it for $ 100.00 bucks.

I haven't been able to get the Nexiq USB Link to work with CAT because of the Dual Datalink funcationality. I've been stuck using the CAT Comm Adapter II ... Can someone here verify they have actually used the Nexiq product with CAT ET?

I tihnk it might also have to be a Dual Data Link truck, as not all models are ... Maybe around 2008 or so it when it changed?

I think you can only use cat comms adaptor 2 on off highway as there is a small tang on nexiq deutsch lead that prevents installation on earthmoving equip etc and if you remove tang and use it you may damage nexiq.Cat comms adaptor works on all cat on and off highway but not on anything else so I have to have both.Have not tried either on trucks yet but believe nexiq will work if you do what prev post says about selecting correct device when starting hookup.Have used nexiq on Detroit and Cummins OK and Cat coms on earthmoving.

Some of CAT Machines NEXIQ won't able to communicate.

Try this;
1. Check if your laptop equipped with serial port or USB only.
2. If you have Serial Port usually (9 Pins) You need a serial cable to connect from PC to Comm Adapter II. it should be included in the CAT Comm Adapter II Tool Group.
3. If You have only USB Port which is common to latest laptop models, try to buy USB to Serial cable. This will have a CD driver and just follow the instruction & procedure during installation.
4. When you install CAT ET, Comm Adapter driver will be installed together with ET software. You just need to license it for first before you can used it. If you don't have a keygen, just post your license Code here so you can have an activation key.
5. Open CAT ET and go to Utilities > Preferences > Communiation > Select the type of comm adapter you have and the com port.
6. ENJOY! if you still have some issues. let me know.

I was always under the impression that J1939 is J1939 - there maybe some manufacturer specific registries but it should simply be J1939 - (At least one would think). Has anyone verified the power pinout and the J1939 comms pinout to see if they are pinned the same as on-highway??

I see a incoherent responce that there maybe a Batt "-" relocation ?? Has this been verified?? I am researching now....

Most ECU use J1939 and J1708 then some CAT machines use a proprietary format called CDL (Caterpillar Data Link). Swapping pins around is not going to help.

im also looking for a comms adaptor for ET off highway - so has anyone sucessfully used a nexiq with ET off highway / industrial units? or a dearborn DPA? i know the power & ground pins are reversed in the adaptors -

ET plug has pin A +ve (centre pin) & pin B -ve

while the normal on highway configuration is the opposite. i assume if the nexiq can communicate with CAT on highway then the CDL pins etc must be ok just need to swap the power / ground?
or has anyone bought a comms adaptor 3 from fleebay? ?639 inc postage..

The only official dealer of 88890020 is Volvo , so look in Volvo dealership with this part number. In Europe this interface cost is high. In US lower. Strange isn't it:)

Hello DK,

I had my first experience yesterday with ET 2010B + Nexiq USB link + Nexiq 9 pin CAT cable 448015 connecting to two marine C12s in single & dual datalink modes. My ET version is Full Service Dealer. Connection was successful but......

ET could only identify the ECM part numbers, ECM serial numbers, and software versions.
ET did not display anything on both engines
Toolbar icons for Tool status, Active diagnostic codes, Logged diagnostic codes, Active event codes, and Logged event codes were all greyed out.
Although connection was success, it could not do any read or diagnostic function on the engines.
I also tried single datalink mode on port and starboard engines individually. Connection was also success but could not diagnose.
My settings on preferences were correct; Nexiq USB Link...

Please advise me on what I can do, where I went wrong. I have also seen posts here at DK that the only working interface for construction and marine is CA2 or 3, and that Nexiq is good only for automotive applications. True???

Thanks in advance to you all....

Let me help everyone out here.

CAT equipment does NOT use J1708 or J1939. It uses a different communication that CAT developed (I believe it is called CDL). They have not made this public knowledge, and thus no one else can read it. The only way to hook-up to CAT construction is with CAT ET and a CAT Comm III adapter.

I do not know if marine works on J1708 or J1939, so I can't say for certain on this.

There are 2 sellers on eBay selling CAT Comm 3 adapters:
Seller #1 - Sells for $1,050, Top Rated, Power Seller, over 2500 positive Feedback: Cat Communication Adapter III Comm 3 P N 317 7484 3177484 J1708 J1939 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAT-Communication-Adapter-III-Comm-3-p-n-317-7484-3177484-J1708-J1939-/270990834384?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item3f184ffad0&vxp=mtr)

Seller #2 - $5 cheaper, but only 450 feedback. Cat Communication Adapter III Comm 3 P N 317 7484 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/CAT-Communication-Adapter-III-Comm-3-p-n-317-7484-/271073128951?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item3f1d37b1f7&vxp=mtr)

If you are needing to hook-up to CAT off-road equipment, the plugs that come with the kit will not work. You will also need this:

157 4829 Cat 9 Pin Adapter Cable J1939 Truck New | eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250835277713&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT)
