Can you pull the signal from just the broadband cable.

I don't have the TV package.

This is just in theory of course!;)

Also, I have just moved into a new flat (renting), and there is a cable wire in the bedroom as well as the living room. They both appear to go outside the flat, so could I pull the signal through to 2 separate boxes? One in the bedroom and one in the living room? Thanks again!:)

If both cables are supplied by VM and a signal is present then that should be possible.

Got any mates witha box that could test your theory? :top:

I suspect that the previous tenants had a feed in the living room for the telly and the feed in the bedroom was for broadband (guess). As these are both one and the same yes if you have two boxes and connect one to each feed you have two seperate or at least individual connections

Not quite true I had the tv package but cancelled after about 3 years, a year later I got a dreambox and connected it up and it all worked perfect. At that time you could not have broadband without the tv package. I applied for BT broadband but they said there had to be approx 50 odd people in your area before they would do it. After waiting and waiting for BT suddenly N*L started broadband without the tv package or phone line so I went for that. The only reason you need broadband is to keep your feed into the house live as they may disconnect it to feed someone else, also it at least gives N*L or V*r*in some sort of income look at what happened to ondigital

Hi,

I'm new to dreambox and am over whelmed by the amount of information out there. I'm interested in what corky is trying to do.

Please could you provide some getting started information for a newbie (I can be contacted at kirbyfc@gmail.com)

err, because I thought I'd get banned pretty quick.

Ok, so here goes, I'd like to know how to decode virgin channels. If I buy a dreambox 500c, do I need to buy any additional hardware? Cards, card readers and programmers?

OR is it simply a matter of downloading software of the web to crack virgin encryption?

I've had a look, but the only idiots guide I could find ois around 3+ yrs old and there's a minefield of information, weeding out the relevant stuff is tough.

get a dreambox 500c mate, its all done through software you wont need anything other than the dreambox, a null modem cable to flash it with and a router or crossover ethernet cable.
theres guides in the download section

hi all - just to clarify - can you still access the tv channels via the broadband connection even if you live outside an area that virgin claim to cover? basically i get virgin broadband but according to the virgin site i can't have their tv package as i'm outside their coverage. cheers for any help!

So can you get this to work by plugging in an ethernet cable from the router to the DreamBox?

We do not have a UHF type cable comming out of the wall, just the Broadband Cable!

That's what people seem to be saying. i'm gonna try and set mine up like that this weekend, so i'll let you know how i get on.

Just so i make sure i take everything i need, can anyone tell me if i'm right in thinking that all i need is a couple of ethernet cables to make the connections from router to dreambox / router to pc? I've already flashed the image so hopefully i can just make the connections and proceed to ftping once i'm set up. on the right track? Thanks.

No, I don't think that this is right. You still need a proper VM cable into the back of a Dreambox to make it work.

If all you have is an Ethernet cable, then I suggest that you find the other end and see what it's connected to. If it's connected to a cable modem, there should also be a UHF type cable connected to the cable modem as well. You will need to buy a splitter and split this UHF type cable into two parts; one for the cable modem and one for the Dreambox.

Connecting your Dreambox via Ethernet cable to the router is good for some things but not essential for TV viewing.

ah - i think the fact that virgin broadband can be delivered in two ways is causing the confusion. If it's their cable broadband then presumably you can use it, but if it's their 'national broadband' it's ADSL and so it doesn't carry the tv signal. That would make a lot more sense - it did seem a bit strange that people seemed to be suggesting that if you lived outside a cable area, you could still pick up cable channels via their broadband.

is that right?

silly question or maybe not........ will a DM500S work with the UHF cable with Virgin signal on it's own?
What I mean is: being a 500S not 500C, will it work without the satellite dish, as long as it's connected to the UHF type cable???

Cheers.
