you cant go wrong using NOD32, i was that impressed with it that i am now paying for it lol , bet i get some stick for that lol

i know what is the worst IMO and thats " Norton Antivirus " it realy takes over your PC and slows it right down.

Avira for me :-
Free antivirus - Avira AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/)
Free and if you do the following you can remove the nag update popup.
-Go to start.
-Settings
-Control panel
-Administrative tools
-Local security policy (If you want to get fancy, you can probably do this through a domain policy if you are on a domain)
- Software restriction policies
- Right click additional Rules
- Select new path rule
- Browse to the avnotify.exe program and set to restrict.

Try to go open that file and you should get an error that execution has been disabled for this file.

This will stop the annoying popup.

The best ultimate security i would recommend is:

Avast - Anti Virus

Malwarebytes.org Anti Malware

Rogue Remover

Zone Alarm Firewall

Arovax Anti Spyware

Super Anti Spyware

Advanced Windows Care

RegSeeker

Ccleaner

Then you could use things like spybot and adaware for backups.

There are tons out there but all the above are free and very effective at there job, if you need any software for anything else just give me a shout.

yes commodo is a good free firewall as well, the built in malware scanner is not very good, however the firewall very rarely leeks to any attacks so yes this is also a good free firewall.

I did not mention before but there are a number of rootkits you can download as backup as well, commodo do one which is good, however i would recommend panda, note rootkits should be very rare on your pc as long as you regulary use malwarebytes anti malware.

Little tip: AVG anti root kit takes up alot of system resources.

Have been using the AVG for quite a while now. Only uses one core to run any scans etc so the machine runs happily using the other core.. Have no real probs with it on any of my sigle core machines as well.

Its horses for courses really, will only say that Symantec was arse, slowed down any box and missed many virus events that AVG found... I have McAfee as well on another box, not very impressive.. Stick with a good free ones, there is no direct support but the products are as good as the subbed versions..

I have Zone Alarm pro with 15794 days of the trial left and I am not complaining. It has served me well for three items Firewall; Antivirus and Antispyware. Touch wood I havn't had any problems with any of those nasties. However I have heard there are nasties like rootkits which none of the present Anti-spyware/virus can detect. Once they enter your computer there is noway of detecting it . The only solution I have seen is to boot your Pc using a cd based Linex OS and then do a sweep through your pc . The reason you can detect them this way is that you are not loading anything from the hard drive hence the rootkit cannot morph into something else and or divert attention away from itself. Ok its not intelegent but it seems to behave that way.

Best antivirus is no antivirus. They are stupid and just check stuff against a database. Definitely do not pay for antivirus, windows defender is more than enough and I even disable it because it is stupid. On Linux, which is what I run the most, I don't use antivirus (pretty much all Linux systems don't include one by default either).

4th March, 2023, 02:45 PM
For those who can check for virus manually, no antivirus is good for them but for me, default antivirus is way better than third party apps.

I use stock Windows 10 antivirus long time, never had any problems. As someone said be careful and that's it. Also adblock in browser is good thing, because it blocks popups and stupid ads.
