View Full Version : What's wrong with 2000 VW Beetle TDI?

Car - 2000 VW Beetle TDI, 5 spd, North America (car made in Brasil).
Customer had basic key (no buttons). There's chip in the key - ID48. Car starts normally, no lights.
Customer asked to make remote key.
I grabbed remote key, programmed remote without problems. Cut the key.
Then I tried to read the PIN. Tried EVERYTHING. Autel im608, Lonsdor, Autopodad (XTool), XHORSE tablet. ALL possible options in all these tools. No success.
Actually, one option in XHorse tablet seemed to work, it gave me PIN which looked correct format (03855), but car did not accept it (17-instrument - login failed).
Then I tried old red little box "VAG key login". It started doing something, but at the end gave me no PIN, engine fan turned on and engine would not start even though immo light was not flashing on the dash.
I was really pissed off at this point. It took me a while to figure out - disconnecting car battery for 20s helped, car was starting again with original key.
Then I gave up and decided simply clone the chip. Guess what? Sniffing does not work on this car! Neither VVDI mini or Keydiy were able to sniff data, tools just don't do anything when key is inserted! This is first time in my life I saw this. And if you think chip was not needed for this car - wrong! Key without chip would not work.
Then I've tried last possible option - VVDI2. tried all possible options out there, no luck either. It tries to read ECU, but at the end (when it actually should start reading data) always gave "response time out".
So which tool works on this old POS?
When I was browsing through the options XHorse tablet (PIN reading options, on one of the pages XHorse), I was able to read some kind of EEPROM, but its size was 208 Bytes, not recognized by anything.

Hi
Vag tacho is doing this car no problem.
Pin is located in the dash.
You can read it's mcu to get pin by eprom.
Had the same story some time ago, try to find one of my topic.

Thanks! I do have Vag Tacho but never ever used it. Will try next time, hopefully it'll work. I really surprised that none of modern programmers could do that car.
One more question - after how many wrong PIN attempts system will get to locked state, and how long it will take to get it out of locked state?

From what i remember, it will get you out from 17 or 25 channel and thats it.
Vag dealy is usually 10 or 20 minutes

For old VW cars I would recommend the old tools like vag key login or sbb2 (old version) or some other old tool.
New tools like Vvdi2 or FVDI/ svci or sbb2 (new version) do not work. They fail...
I did had some problem with Golf4 from ‘98 and after all tools that I tried, the key login did the job in few minutes...

With VCDS, you will see the lock time.
And several other tools.
Its in module 25.
Block 003
Field 1,2 and 3.
Need to be 0.
Each field is the time in minutes.
Ignition on, (with a battery charger).
And let the time count down to zero - 0.
And you back where you started.

Bettles and old Audis A3 sometimes are pain in the ass. VAG Tacho should work, if not open cluster and read motorola MCU.

Is it any signal out of the antenna ring? I had this problem that you have once on Brazilian made Beetle. Client has been to VW that faild to program key, after some hours at my place I discover that there was no signal from antenna ring and I was able to start with a unprogramed key.
The realy strange thing that this client was the first owner of the car and the clame to not have done any immo off. I did not investigate this further, client was happy to have two working keys.

Try eeprom programmer 1.19 with this soft and KKL cable, you will read pin, rest vcds.

Added a key to the tidy 1C0919861C,
it took 1 hour.
Orange5 read processor . Tango made the chip.

VAG tacho is my go to on these, done 100+ will always read the pin, wait 1 minute then you can program keys using Vag Tacho, have used VVDi2 to read pin from engine when clocks were damaged and had been replaced with a 2nd hand one and VCDS to recode clocks
Had one that had some serious issues, fan came on, orig key wouldn't work, wouldn't program, but managed to clone eventually

I didn't check signal, but immo system definitely works, car would start and die without working chip. That was biggest mystery on that car.
BTW - that car was also made in Brazil.

Like I said - VVDI2 wouldn't read PIN no matter what. XHorse tablet gave me PIN in one of attempts, but car would not accept it (login failed). I'm wondering if immo could be locked at that point (earlier I've tried wrong PIN 1 or 2 times already).
I definitely was not in the mood to pull cluster on that old POS. Like I said - I ended up transferring chip from his valet key to the newly made remote key, and customer told me he has one more working valet key at home. So all ended more or less good except lost time :)
If he will come back I definitely want to try VagTacho to see if it pulls the PIN.

Startups think they can do everything with just one tool or just China ones.
These cars are 20 years before

The Genuine one I have contacted, but never got response...
I wanted to buy the tool, but never got answers for my questions...
So if you are not sure with some VAG systems/ dashboards, you have to buy the tool and test it by yourself...

The sad fact is, those startups are making most jobs because new cars are easy (beside some exceptions of course). Now such Bettles and other cars which are tricky to do or there is some much knowledge needed to do the job properly, are so old that we rarely see them.

I made keys for several Beetles with Vag Tacho USB 5.0, the Chinese clone that costs around $25-30, it always worked perfectly.
This investment is recovered at the first key made

I remember my full confidence when pluged AVDI to read pin code from my first beetle :D
Had full VAG license and yet could not do anything... quick go around and dash's mcu was read to find pin in eeprom.

for this price, he will get a pin at the nearest VW service
you need the owner of the vehicle, documents of the vehicle and a bit of time, max 1 hour

you have apparently never done this
because you were not the owner of the vehicle
only the owner of the vehicle will be issued with such data

1996-2000 k-line cluster can be read by obd, using vvdi2 or avdi. (912D60)
Get the pin, from this dump with some other tool. Perhaps keytool, tango or Orange5 will give the pin.
Did one a few month ago.
There a 3 marelli dashes reading option, if i remember correct. Should you choose incorrect:
If the dash stays in boot. Disconnect battery.

Yuuup... VVDI2 is great tool for VAG but for these Beetles the easiest for anyone is the VAG Tacho

VAG Tacho is the only tool that is 100% on these old beetles and old audi TT models , never fails , vag tacho also clears the airbag fault light that many tools cant clear after key programming , vag tacho has been a sound investment for many years often saving day when other kits fail .
