In Germany a distinction is made between the many 'public' broadcasters (ARD, ZDF, MDR, WDR, SWR...) and 'private' ones (SAT1, PRO7, RTL...)
Regular old televisions (with CRT) were able to receive signals from both public and private (at least a subset of) broadcasters.
Now with our new Dreambox (with a Philips digital cable tuner) we are only able to receive the 'public' broadcasts.
What is clear is that with a subscription from our cable company we would be able to see the 'private' broadcasts now as well. The only question is, how do the old television sets do this without a subscription.
The real question is, how can we set up our new dreambox to watch the 'private' broadcasts just as we did with the plain old television set?
