    Buying A Dbox

    Hi,

I'm pondering over buying a Dbox from one of the German sellers on eBay. Can anyone recommend one or advise one to avoid?

Also, they all seem to come running the Neutrino image. Does this mean it will work "out of the box"? Is the Neutrino image a good place to start for a total newbie?

    Many thanks in anticipation.

    avoid dbox1
avoid dbox2 not in debug mode
avoid dbox2 with only 16mb memory
my preferences are sagem 2x (amd) or nokia
make sure it is for cable

neutrino does not mean it will work out the box....
this tells u it's in debug mode and the least u can hope for is that u just need to scan for services for ur location.

    cheers

      Many thanks for the reply.

All the units I have seen do not mention how much RAM is in the box. Is there a model no. I should look for?

      How about this?

why risk buying a box that is over 10 years old, has no warranty and is the size and weight of a paving slab . when you can get a dreambox for the same price or cheaper and are brandnew and only the size of a video tape

Good question.... So the Dreambox is the "modern" equivalent of the Dbox2? Sorry....newbies asking the same old questions must get boring for you old hands!!

              i got a 500c and a dbox2....i prefer the dbox2 - had it over 5 yrs - just find it easier to use......benefits of 500c are

              small
              instant boot
              cheap

i had a (bad) clone therefore the tuner on mine is weak, but is fine with a booster, so i think this may be the reason i'm biased towards the dbox2......

In a way, yes. The Dbox2 was never intended to be flashed with open source firmware, the Dreambox was, and was designed as a result of the Dbox2 hack.

The Dbox2 is old now but technically way ahead of it's time when made. If comparing a Dbox2 to a DM500, both have pro's and cons.

Dbox2 pro's. LCD display (big plus), lots of UK tailored images, lots about with good forum support.

DM500 pro's. More modern, generally more stable and very small box.

Up to you what you want from a box though.

Thanks guys. That's really useful and has helped me make up my mind. I think if the Dreambox is the best option for me.

I have had a dbox2 for the past 5 years and it has been a very stable box, I cant fault it but I have decided to up date to a OEM FTA Cable Receiver PVR DVB600 from linuxsat because I the dbox is a bit dated now.

From what I can see the PVR DVB600 is a dm600c but just has a differant shell, so just waiting on it to arrive then I will sell the dbox on but it has been a good work horse and is still going strong.
