    Nokia Dbox2 cooling fan mod?

    Hi Guy's!

I have a Nokia Dbox2 with a tuner that overheats unless cooled by a fan!

Currently I have the box on it's side with the lid off, standing next to a big fan blowing over the tuner and this works fine, if a little impractical !

Can anyone point me in the direction of a cooling fan mod tute?

Am thinking of fitting a PC 120mm fan over the tuner but would like to know if I can take a feed from somewhere inside the box....maybe the IDE connector?

If anyone has done this before, I would be most appreciative of any advice!

    Thanks in advance!

TBH, if you box is overheating like this, fitting a fan is not a cure. Dbox's don't normally have heat issues.

If it is overheating then it will fail despite how much air you blow over it. You need to sort out why it is getting hot instead of trying to cool it.

Cheers mate, I have had many Dbox2's but on this one I think there is a dry solder joint "somewhere" that locks up the box once it gets warm. So the only solution for this particular box is to keep it cool - this is why I need to fit a fan on to it as I can't be arsed with changing the tuner as it may not be where the dry joint is!

Can anyone advise if I can take a feed from anywhere in the box to fit a cooling fan?

Don't think so, m8. You're probably better off using an external juicy Universal mains adaptor to give your big ~~~~-off fan the 12vDC supply it needs. You won't find this inside the box...

In any case, the problem is more likely to be on the PSU section of the mobo- not the tuner side. Have a good look at that area- mains OFF of course- but still be careful, as the caps still hold quite a belt!!

I take it you've removed the excess baggage Modem board alongside the Tuner can? Junking this will a) reduce the load on the PSU and therefore it's thermal output, and b) allow a better cool airflow around the tuner, which might solve the issue without a fan.

        Cheers- AL

It can be done here is a picture i found but have no details for a nokia
as Al said it would be better with a external power source
Here is a tut for the sagem using internal power source
Digital Kaos - Downloads - Internal cooling fan for sagem

Al - Yeah the modem was the first thing I did !

Fergal - Nice guide, I'm sure I can do a similar job on this Nokia!

I agree with above, if you do tackle it, use an external supply (cheap plug psu)

Don't increse load to the internal Switch Mode with a fan, good luck.
