Step by step to Set up Windows Vista to work with Dbox2

there are short cuts to go to Network Sharing centre in Vista windows if this is your first time setting up your computer to flash images and FTP files to your Dbox here is the easy step by step to get there.

If you are using wireless then go to start / Control Panel /double click on Network and Sharing Centre.

    1) In Network an Sharing Centre. you will see Local Area Conection and Wireless Conection.

    2) Click right mouse button once on wireless conection a window will open click on "desible" a window will open asking for your permission just click on "continue" button

    3) Local Area Connection is already desibled if you were working with wireless.

    4) Now click on right hand mouse button on Local area Connection and go to properties a window will open asking for your permision click on "continue".

    5) click on "configure" button and click on "advanced" tub then highlight Link speed/Duplex mode and choose "10Mbps/Half duplex " and click on "OK" button in the bottom of the page.

    6)repeat step 4 as above

    7) This time Highlite "Internet Protocl version (TCP/IPv4)" and click on "properties" button a window will open click on "(use the following IP address Radio Button)" now type your Dbox IP address in the IP box and at the forth set or single number of the IP should be minust 1 ie: if Dbox IP address is

(192.168.1.5) then you should type (192.168.1.4) or if is (192.168.1.103) then type (192.168.1.102)

    8) Just click in the sub net mask box and automaticaly will give you (255.255.255.0)
then click OK and this changes will be saved for you

    9) Highlite Local Area Conection click right hand mouse button on it a window will open then click on the first line "Enable"

now your Laptop is ready to transfere or FTP your stuff to Dbox

    10) open your ftp Client application and type the following info:

Host: is your Dbox IP address as in Dbox network
    username: root
    Password: dbox or dbox2

Click on "connect" button and that's it now you will be able to see all the directories and folders in your Dbox on your computer's monitor please don't do something silly like delete important files and folders from your Dbox but if you did just reflash the image again and ftp keys and the fix to your box and have a good time.

I hope this step by step how to set up PC/Laptop runing on Vista Windows will help you and anyone else.

    Good luck from Salami

              Hi littlelou,

the IP address you entred in the Local Area Connection should be one digit minus at the end of the IP address than the one in your Dbox Exemple:

              Dbox IP is: 192.168.1.2

IP for the Local Area Connection should be: 192.168.1.1

you only type the correct Dbox IP in FTP application to connect to your Dbox.

Although it is theoretically possible to talk to your dbox through a router I have found to my chagrin that 2 times out of 3 on a hard wired hub they just don't want to co-operate, on a wireless router you can forget it, it just won't happen at all bud, it is best you use a direct connection through a crossover patch cable, and remember to set the IP address to 1 below that of the dbox or again it just won't happen at all.

Use a proprietary FTP program Total Commander 32 is teh one I use, I have reflashed several boxes for myself and family successfully using my Vista laptop.

You must have your network set up wrong then m8. All will work fine with wireless routers and hardwire hubs. You also dont need to have the r IP address of the PC 1 below that of the dbox.

Yes cant quite understand why you state that PC IP needs to be one digit lower than IP of DBox, I agree it does not have to be like that, infact I prefer to have PC set to the earliest IP address. Do note though that the Dbox does need to be on the same IP range (192.168.x.x etc.).
The other thing I cant quite work out is why the need to change your network card to Half duplex, this I find is also not needed.
Appart from that though good information.

This advice from Pros with more experience in the Dbox and again we all do different things to help each other to overcome any probs with a littel experience we gained through out the time.

That Guide is very good and will be of great use to many. Hell good to have for reference anyway.
As to my comments above what I said was just based on my experience in getting things to work. I personally use Vista and have not had a need to change the duplex of my network card and all I was saying was I didnt understand why you would need to do this. I was hoping you could have given a reason for your findings. As far as IP I find that as long as you don't pick a massive IP difference on the last digit all works fine.
I am a little bit old school and always prefer to assign first IP's to main components on network ie PC's, after server of course if you have one.
Again great guide and very usefull. Sorry if you took my comments the wrong way but it honestly was not a knock at you or your advice. Just a queary really.

                          Thanks
