EX5000 DIY HDD Installation problem

Hi Guys....I have just bought and installed a Western Digital Scorpio 160 gig PATA hdd into my EX5000 PVR box. When powered up the box does'nt come out of standby. However when I remove the hdd and re-power up the STB, the box starts up as normal with all channels present. Can anybody help. My gut feeling is that the HDD may require formatting, which will require a drive caddy. But any help and further pointers will be appreciated.
